February 2011 at the FEG: June Brown

June Brown was born and raised in the north of England. She and her husband immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1975.

Since that time they have lived from the west to the east coast of Canada, as well as 4 years in the mid west U.S. Nova Scotia is the place they call home and they returned in 2002 to live in the beautiful Annapolis Valley.

June has been painting watercolours for approximately twelve years.

Her subjects are landscape, seascape, botanicals and architecture. She loves the breadth of creativity watercolour painting offers: from the most subtle and delicate work to the most dramatic and vibrant of expression.

Some of June's work can currently be seen at the Hants County Hospital in Windsor.

October 2010 at the FEG: David Howells

Bottom of the Garden
David Howells was born in Leicester, England and immigrated to Nova Scotia at a young age. David studied fine arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and graphic design in Middleton, N.S. where he graduated as Class Valedictorian. His work first gained public exposure in 1982 with Zwicker's Gallery in Halifax, N.S.

In his early twenties, breaking away from high realism and photorealism, David discovered a new technique and approach to his art. His palette became more colourful and his style more free. In 1986, he moved to Toronto, Ontario, where his work was exhibited in various leading Canadian galleries including two in Yorkville. He has exhibited in numerous galleries in England, the USA and Canada.

Painter, David Howells
For nearly a decade David participated successfully in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. His art has been exhibited at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto and is in many private, university and corporate collections in Britain, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada. In 1996 David's work placed first in the oil painting category at the Allen Town Art Show in Buffalo, New York. Some major commissioned works have included murals, book illustrations and stone lithos. He has also taught courses and guest lectured at the University of Toronto. Posters of some of David's work have been marketed globally by Canadian Art Prints. Limited Editions and Original Prints have been marketed across North America by Scene Canada.

Currently a permanent resident of St. Croix, Nova Scotia, David has traveled extensively in nearly forty countries. This broad range of exposure and his love of nature are evident in his paintings.

September 2010 at the FEG: Guenter Burr

Born and originally trained in Germany, today Guenter Burr lives and works along the south shore of the Minas Basin, where the natural surroundings of sea, shore, fields and forests provide ready inspiration for his art, working in impressionistic, expressionistic and abstract styles.

"I work with different styles to meet my intentions for each individual painting"

"The paintings are thought to create soothing stimulation in our stressful surroundings. Looking for harmony is one of the present goals in my life as well as in my paintings," says Burr.

Since 2004 Guenter has had the opportunity to display his paintings in the Lighthouse's Gallery on the Noel Shore.  He has developed an intense relationship and interest in the whole area, the ever-changing moods and in particular the tides.

“I live here and am lucky to experience the influence of this enormous volume of moving water every day, and feel the challenge of interpreting this mighty power and energy in paintings” says Burr.

As well as the beauty of the Nova Scotia landscape, Guenter also feels the need to express the power of the southern sun in scenes from Tuscany, Spain, Italy and France, places where he likes to vacation.

Over the last few years Guenter has felt the need more and more to express the non-visible, so has started creating abstract and impressionist paintings. There is no provocation wanted. The paintings are thought to create soothing stimulation in our stressful surroundings.  “Looking for harmony is one of the present goals in my life as well as in my paintings”.

“For every painting, my interest is also to honour my teacher Dieter Ludas-Larsen.”  Dieter helped to make Guenter aware of how beautiful nature is. To express this beauty in landscapes, flowers and animals, is the most important power driving Guenter to paint. Before passing away in 2004 Dieter left Guenter with a piece of advice that stays with him to this day…

"Don't sign a painting if there is still something you could complete or improve!"

Guenter Burr’s work will be on show at the Fort Edward  Gallery from September 23rd until October 20th 2010.
