Paint Windsor 2013

Once again Phoenix Hollow B&B invites you to enjoy a day of art, and charity with the 5th annual Paint Windsor. While the artists preform and create throughout Windsor their art is for sale at the B&B and treats are provided by the local restaurants. 

Part of all proceeds go to the Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary Society and the rest to the artists. Come to the B&B to view the work, visit your artist on location and enjoy.

Heritage Artisans in Action: Tradtional Mi'kmaq and Acadian Crafts!

Heritage Artisans in Action; Jewellery

All are invited to join the Avon River Heritage Society Museum (ARHS) and the Hants County Arts Council (HCAC) in welcoming jewellers Mary Lou Bennett, Emilie Butler and Al Carter for the seventh instalment of Heritage Artisan in Action, taking place throughout the ARHS museum in Newport Landing on Sunday August 25^th from 10am – 5pm.

Mary Lou Bennett

Mary Lou enjoys the creative process of designing and creating, taking her inspiration from nature and the landscape that surrounds her, her palette often reflects the colours of the land, sea and sky. 

In her designs she often incorporates glass, wood, pearls and semi-precious stones with brightly coloured beads. 

For over ten years Mary Lou has been designing her limited edition and one of a kind line of jewellery and accessories called "Damselfly Gifts" 

Working from her home studio in Windsor, N.S., Mary Lou's line includes earrings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches and hand painted silk scarves.

Emilie Butler

Inspired by her desire to preserve moments, objects, and places, Emilie creates tangible memories as wearable art. Through in-depth exploration of pattern, texture, contrast, shape, material and colour, her designs capture the essence of these retrospections, combining these various qualities into stylish and unique pieces of jewellery.

A graduate of NSCAD University’s Jewellery Design & Metalsmithing program, Emilie has long been a creator of art, particularly as adornment. Through metal, jewellery in particular, she’s discovered a powerful and challenging medium to serve as an outlet to further develop her skills in technique and design.

Emilie currently runs Ophelia Jewellery Design from her home studio in St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S.

Alfred Carter

Al is what you might call a Jack-of-all-trades. He has worked as a gold miner, carpenter, bartender, minister, ship carver, counsellor, teacher and entrepreneur, among other things. 

His greatest passion is possibly learning; he eagerly absorbs information about new and interesting subjects. 

His Native, Black, English, and Swedish background naturally led to an interest into the traditions and histories of these different nationalities, and eventually he was able to add Mi’kmaq jewellery maker to his long list of trades and talents.

Using traditional designs, patterns and materials, Al designs authentic M’ikmaq beaded jewellery and accessories.

Heritage Artisans in Action; Painting!

All are welcome to join the Avon River Heritage Society Museum (ARHS) and the Hants County Arts Council (HCAC) in welcoming six painters who works in a variety of mediums and styles for the sixth installment of Heritage Artisan in Action, taking place throughout the ARHS museum in Newport Landing on Sunday August 11th from 10am – 5pm


Sandra Aucoin
Sandra has been sketching and painting ever since she can remember. She is a self-taught artist, originally from Cheticamp, Nova Scotia. Sandra works mostly in pastels and is known for her detailed portraits of horses.



Claudia Dobson
A realist painter and nature photographer, Claudia constantly finds inspiration in her surroundings and enjoys capturing the vivid colours that can be found in nature, both through the eye of her lens and her brush.

Terrie Greencorn
As a multi-media painter, Terrie often incorporates sculptural textures into her designs, using subjects researched then reinvented with brush and paint. An award winning designer from Dartmouth, she also teaches locally and across Canada, sharing her passion for art.

Karen Harvie
Karen, a member of the Annapolis Valley Decorative Artists, prefers to paint in watercolours but also enjoys oils and acrylics. She likes to experiment, working with texture and painting on different canvases such as window screens and fabric.

Kelly Mitchelmore
Kelly is an acrylic and oil painter with a flare for the dramatic and a love of saturated colours! Specializing in knife work with thick layers of bright contrasting colours, Kelly adds texture and vibrancy to her canvases - allowing for more dimensions and luminosity.

Elizabeth Robinson
Liz finds total solace in painting, yet a wonderful sense of adventure in starting each new piece. She works mostly with acrylic on canvas. Her preferences are nautical scenes and landscapes, but recently has begun painting portraits. This has given her a chance to really see where her painting can take her, and she’s loving it!

Heritage Artisans in Action: Metal!

All are welcome to join the Avon River Heritage Society Museum (ARHS) and the Hants County Arts Council (HCAC) in welcoming metal artists G.A. Jank and Steve Veinot for the fifth installment of Heritage Artisan in Action, taking place throughout the ARHS museum in Newport Landing on Sunday July 28th from 10am – 5pm.

G.A Jank can often be found nestled away deep in the heart of Hants County, tucked away amongst the vibrant palette of nature and metal that makes up his sculpture garden and studio.

Jank’s work tends to incorporate reclaimed iron and stone that he has found strewn upon the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Each piece carries a message about the mechanics and the power of nature, where humanity must live in harmony with the things around them. 

Jank’s work is available for viewing by appointment at his gallery in Ashdale, Persona Gallery, and he has a show opening on August 2nd at the Bread Gallery in Brooklyn.

Scraps of wood, iron, glass, leather, silverware and other collectibles are brought to life by the imaginations of Steve Veinot and his partner Nikki Allen.



Each piece is constructed from various recycled materials; pieces of our heritage that have been left behind by time have been salvaged and re-imagined into one of a kind whimsical “Pieces of the Past” sculptures.
