Heritage Artisans in Action; Painting!

All are welcome to join the Avon River Heritage Society Museum (ARHS) and the Hants County Arts Council (HCAC) in welcoming six painters who works in a variety of mediums and styles for the sixth installment of Heritage Artisan in Action, taking place throughout the ARHS museum in Newport Landing on Sunday August 11th from 10am – 5pm

Sandra Aucoin

Sandra has been sketching and painting ever since she can remember. She is a self-taught artist, originally from Cheticamp, Nova Scotia. Sandra works mostly in pastels and is known for her detailed portraits of horses.

Claudia Dobson

A realist painter and nature photographer, Claudia constantly finds inspiration in her surroundings and enjoys capturing the vivid colours that can be found in nature, both through the eye of her lens and her brush.

Terrie Greencorn

As a multi-media painter, Terrie often incorporates sculptural textures into her designs, using subjects researched then reinvented with brush and paint. An award winning designer from Dartmouth, she also teaches locally and across Canada, sharing her passion for art.

Karen Harvie

Karen, a member of the Annapolis Valley Decorative Artists, prefers to paint in watercolours but also enjoys oils and acrylics. She likes to experiment, working with texture and painting on different canvases such as window screens and fabric.

Kelly Mitchelmore

Kelly is an acrylic and oil painter with a flare for the dramatic and a love of saturated colours! Specializing in knife work with thick layers of bright contrasting colours, Kelly adds texture and vibrancy to her canvases - allowing for more dimensions and luminosity.

Elizabeth Robinson

Liz finds total solace in painting, yet a wonderful sense of adventure in starting each new piece. She works mostly with acrylic on canvas. Her preferences are nautical scenes and landscapes, but recently has begun painting portraits. This has given her a chance to really see where her painting can take her, and she’s loving it!

March 2011 at the FEG: Carlos Da Rosa

Tree at Blomidon Cliffs
Carlos Da Rosa notes the scenic beauty of Nova Scotia, particularly the red cliffs of Blomidon and the tides of the Minas Basin, as sources of inspiration for his paintings.

Recent trips to Europe and Italy have also served as inspiration, evident in his various bold and colourful tributes to Tuscany.

“To my eye, the most important aspect of every creation is the sense of light, especially at different times of the day and seasons. The acrylic medium on larger canvasses allows me to express these subtleties in landscapes as well as exploring human form (nudes).”

Tuscan Hills
Carlos has had the good fortune to distribute his work through the former Utata Gallery in Windsor NS as well as the "Art Sales and Rental” Gallery located at the Art Gallery of NS. He regularly participates in the "Great Little Art Show" held each year at Newport Landing, Hants County Arts Council’s annual “Festival of Art” in Windsor and this is his second time showing at the Fort Edward Gallery.

Carlos and his wife now call Falmouth, Nova Scotia their home after relocating from Ontario in 2001.

February 2011 at the FEG: June Brown

June Brown was born and raised in the north of England. She and her husband immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1975.

Since that time they have lived from the west to the east coast of Canada, as well as 4 years in the mid west U.S. Nova Scotia is the place they call home and they returned in 2002 to live in the beautiful Annapolis Valley.

June has been painting watercolours for approximately twelve years.

Her subjects are landscape, seascape, botanicals and architecture. She loves the breadth of creativity watercolour painting offers: from the most subtle and delicate work to the most dramatic and vibrant of expression.

Some of June's work can currently be seen at the Hants County Hospital in Windsor.

October 2010 at the FEG: David Howells

Bottom of the Garden
David Howells was born in Leicester, England and immigrated to Nova Scotia at a young age. David studied fine arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and graphic design in Middleton, N.S. where he graduated as Class Valedictorian. His work first gained public exposure in 1982 with Zwicker's Gallery in Halifax, N.S.

In his early twenties, breaking away from high realism and photorealism, David discovered a new technique and approach to his art. His palette became more colourful and his style more free. In 1986, he moved to Toronto, Ontario, where his work was exhibited in various leading Canadian galleries including two in Yorkville. He has exhibited in numerous galleries in England, the USA and Canada.

Painter, David Howells
For nearly a decade David participated successfully in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. His art has been exhibited at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto and is in many private, university and corporate collections in Britain, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada. In 1996 David's work placed first in the oil painting category at the Allen Town Art Show in Buffalo, New York. Some major commissioned works have included murals, book illustrations and stone lithos. He has also taught courses and guest lectured at the University of Toronto. Posters of some of David's work have been marketed globally by Canadian Art Prints. Limited Editions and Original Prints have been marketed across North America by Scene Canada.

Currently a permanent resident of St. Croix, Nova Scotia, David has traveled extensively in nearly forty countries. This broad range of exposure and his love of nature are evident in his paintings.
